Try Something New Tuesday!--Planets

It's the first Tuesday of the Month--Try Something New Tuesday!!  Yahoo! What is Try Something New Tuesday? Well, grab your camera or photo editing software and try something new! Anything new--you don't have to try what I tried (but you can if you want). Try a new camera setting you've never used, a new subject you've always wanted to photograph, a new texture in photo editing... anything goes as long as you've never tried it before! The idea is to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Don't worry, you've got till midnight next Tuesday to link up if you don't have time today (especially since I'm posting so late today).

While digging deeper into one of the blogs I regularly check in on, I discovered a really awesome tutorial for making planets.  What are planets?  Just what you see above.  They are pictures turned into circles! 

How do you make them?  Super simple!  Check out Ashley's tutorial!  She actually translated this Gimp tutorial for making planets into a tutorial for Photoshop.

Ok, so you can see the lines in my planets because I'm a little too short on time to try to edit them out better.  I still think they look cool though!  Next Tuesday I'll post a couple more planets I tried!

Try Something New Tuesdays--Second Chance

Nutty's face looks completely different but i am surprised at how symmetrical Tottie's face is.  I don't think her's look much different.  I would have done Hubby too but I couldn't find a picture of him that seemed to work.

Try Something New Tuesdays--Facial Symmetry

Yahoo!  It's the first Tuesday of October and that means it's Try Something New Tuesday!  What is Try Something New Tuesday?  Well, grab your camera or photo editing software and try something new!  Anything new--you don't have to try what I tried (but you can if you want).  Try a new camera setting you've never used, a new subject you've always wanted to photograph, a new texture in photo editing... anything goes as long as you've never tried it before!  The idea is to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.  Don't worry, you've got till midnight next Tuesday to link up if you don't have time today.

I discovered this super fun Gimp Plug-in for facial symmetry (click on the link to see a really cool example)while searching for editing tricks one day.  Unfortunately, I could not get the plug-in to work for me so last week I did facial symmetry manually on my own.  It took some work but it was definitely worth it to see the results!  Don't look too close though, my blending wasn't the greatest.  The picture in the middle is my real face.  The left is the left side of my face mirrored and the right is the right side mirrored. 
How did I do it?  Simple really:
1)  I used the "free select tool" to select half of my face. 
2)  I then copied and pasted that selection into a new layer.
3)  I flipped it over,
4)  then moved it to cover up the other side of my face.
5)  I anchored that layer,
6)  then blended the edges a little so they weren't so harsh.

Next Tuesday I'll post the facial symmetry pictures of my girls!

Try Something New Tuesdays--Water Drops

It's the second Tuesday of the month and that means it's your last chance to try something new and link up!  Don't have a clue what I'm talking about?  Let me explain...

The first Tuesday of every month is Try Something New Tuesday.  That means you should grab your camera or photo editing software and try something new with it.  It's an excuse to get out of your comfort zone.  Anything goes as long as you've never tried it before.  Failures are welcome--after all, this is the first time doing what you're doing!  If you remember on the first Tuesday of the month, you can link up right away.  If not, the linky is open until midnight (central time) of the second Tuesday of the month.  Link up any time during the week.  Or if you're like me and want a Tuesday meme on an actual Tuesday, link up on the second Tuesday of the month :)

I've been extremely busy lately and didn't get to try anything new last week.  This week I challenged myself to get water drop photos.  I've always thought they were cool.

These are the best of the hundreds of pictures I took!  Taking these took a lot of time and patience!

I tried a bunch of different techniques from a bunch of different Google searches on how to photograph water drops but found the most helpful one here.

That tutorial was the simplest and I actually got my best drops when I followed that technique (believe it or not!).  Too see the raw, unedited (i.e. un-cropped) versions of these photos plus a few bloopers, visit my Facebook Page (give me some time to get them posted later in the day though).

Ok, so to be completely honest, I have not exactly tried something new this past week.  Between our State Fair (pictures to come later this week), the Labor Day holiday, and helping Hubby with financial stuff for his company, I haven't had a lot of time to try new things with my camera.   In all reality though, everything I'm doing with my camera right now is new since it's a new camera with a ton of new features! 
This week I'm determined to get a water drop picture.  I've always wanted to try it and now here's my chance!  It may take me all week to actually catch a water drop but I'm definitely going to try!

This post I did last Friday inspired me to get out of the normal modes on my camera and start to see my world in macro.  For an entire day, I went around and tried to shoot things in macro.  I stayed away from flowers and bugs and things like that because that's what everyone uses macro for.  I wanted to do something different.  Here's some of my favorite shots....

 Ok, I have no clue what happened with the editing on this photo! I edited it last night (in the middle of the night) when I got home from work and I must have been half asleep. Something's off...oh well, you get the point of the picture :)

No Try Something New Tuesdays This Week

I am sorry but I do not have a Try Something New Tuesdays this week.  If you had a link-up planned for this week, please save it for next week. 
It was a bad week for me and an even worse weekend.  Tottie started getting sick last weekend.  I took her in to the doctor on Tuesday with mucousy, bloody stools and screaming every time she pooped.  The test results came back on Thursday that it was C-diff.  Friday she started throwing up and wouldn't stop, so we ended up in the Emergency Room getting IV fluids and anti-nausea meds all night.  Saturday we pretty much slept all day.  Sunday she started throwing up again.  Thank God they sent us home from the ER with anti-nausea meds!  Yesterday was better but Tottie still isn't 100%.  I'm exhausted and haven't really touched my camera this week.

Back to the main subject, because I haven't had a lot of participation in Try Something New Tuesdays since I started it a few weeks ago, and because it's a lot of work for me to try something new every week.  I am thinking of making this a once a month meme now.  What do you think?  Would you be more or less willing to participate if it were once a month? 

Try Something New Tuesdays--My Daughter's Eyes

For this week's Try Something New Tuesdays I decided to try a different perspective for my photography--my daughter's perspective.  My youngest daughter is (almost) 18 months old and I've often wondered what the world looks like in her eyes.  I got out my camera, got down at her level, and began to click away.  These pictures are from Tottie's "eyes" and then from my "eyes".

I am amazed at how much bigger the yard looks and how much taller the wall looks from her perspective!

The stairs must feel like climbing a mountain!

Tottie doesn't have to look up to see Nutty.

TJ must look like a horse!  Tottie's going to grow up saying we had a HUGE dog when she was little!

Such a tall, big daddy!

Try Something New Tuesdays--3D Photography

While surfing the internet for fun photography tricks, I came across Digital Photography School's 3D Photography Post.  You know those pictures where you let your eyes relax or go cross-eyed and then you see it in 3D?  That's what I'm talking about.  Wow!  The post and pictures were totally cool, and they even showed you how to do it yourself!  Of course, I had to try it!
I started with something simple just to see if I could get the technique.  Here's what I got:

 It worked!  But it doesn't have much depth.

Next to something I could add depth to:

 Still not the absolute coolest effect.

Then I found this toy:

 Now we're talking!!  I can't believe my 3D photography worked and how cool it is!!

3D photography is a fairly easy thing to do!  The hardest part for me was standing still enough not to move my view finder too much.  It took a couple of tries on each photo but I eventually go it!

This week I tried finding letters around my house.  Click here and I'll show you where I got the idea. 

 I just looked around my house for the letters.  They didn't turn out as bad as I thought, nor did they turn out as good as I had hoped either.  I'm not at all thrilled with my "J".  I think I may have to re-take that picture at a different angle.

I got home from work last night at 12:30 am and panicked because I didn't do anything new with my camera this week and I had nothing for Try Something New Tuesdays.  What was I going to do in the dark at 12:30 am?!?  Oh!  How about light painting!?!  I think this is sooo cool!

What is light painting?  Just what you see...

Go to a dark place, put your camera on a tripod, and set it to a very slow shutter speed...

set the self-timer, take a light source and start to draw!

My attempt at writing my blog name.

My name turned out much better.

Light off, stand in one spot, light on for a second or two...light off, move to a different spot, light on for a second or two...repeat as often as you want until your camera finishes the picture.

Isn't that cool?!  I learned a few things from this:

1) Wear dark clothes so that you don't get noticed.

2) Make sure your light source isn't too bright.

3) It's a little harder than it looks to get things centered. (I had to crop most of these pictures)

4) You'll need to run some kind of noise reduction on your pictures because will be grainy (at least mine were).
