Composition Part 2--Framing Your Photos

An easy way to bring interest and focus to your subject in a photo is to compose it with a frame around it.

Almost anything can be used as a frame for your subject, including people!

The above photo certainly isn't one of my greatest, but it does show how the people on either side of the picture make your eyes draw toward the center.

Framing not only adds focus to your subject, it can also add depth and layers to your photos.  The trees in the foreground of the above picture provide a sense of depth to the sunset shot.

Context is another advantage to framing.  Shooting through a window, using an archway, or framing with trees gives the viewer a sense of where the subject is in the photo.

Be careful when using frames, however.  If done wrong, a frame can distract a photo.  Keep your focus on your subject, and your frame relevant to your shot.  Also make sure that your frame does not obstruct too much of your photo or subject.

There you have it!  An easy way of adding interest and focus to your composition!

This was very helpful. I am trying to take better pictures, but I don't find the right kind of information on the internet. This, with the pictures, helped things make sense. Thanks!
